Snake River or Ansel Adams Overlook

This viewpoint is famous for Ansel Adams’ iconic photo of the Tetons and Snake River in 1942. Ansel Adams, an American photographer who was the most important landscape photographer of the 20th century. He is perhaps the most widely known and beloved photographer in the history of the U.S. Many of his photographs were of national parks and other protected areas of the American West. This location shows the Snake River Overlook which is a viewpoint on Hwy 89 between Moran Junction and Moose Junction. Ansel Adams photographed this iconic view of the Teton Range and Snake River from roughly this vantage point. The sweep of the Snake River below the sagebrush flats and the high peaks of the Teton Range towering above enthrall all who visit. Today visitors try to capture this image forgetting that trees have grown and the exact location is not known. Below this point, rafters access the Snake River at Deadmans Bar coming downstream from Pacific Creek or continuing on to Moose.
