The Story Behind the Photograph
Some landscapes reveal their beauty through color. Others speak more clearly when color is removed.
Standing within this narrow sandstone canyon, I was drawn to the extraordinary movement of the rock. The walls seemed to fold and flow around one another, their smooth surfaces shaped by the patient work of water over countless years.
Light entered from above, touching certain curves while leaving others in deep shadow. That contrast gave the formations an almost sculptural quality.
I chose black and white because I wanted the photograph to be about the essential character of the place — its lines, textures, shapes and the relationship between darkness and light.
There is something remarkable about the quiet order found within these formations. What appears almost fluid is solid stone, shaped slowly into patterns that no human hand could reproduce.
For me, this photograph is a reminder that some of nature’s most extraordinary work happens gradually, beyond the scale of our everyday perception of time.
